Strategy Inc (MSTR) Deep-Dive: A Tightrope Walk at a 100x Valuation
Thesis verdict: holds, with conditions — the company holds ample dollar liquidity and a ten-billion-dollar-scale ATM capacity, so near-term liquidity is not in doubt; but the core business generates little cash and has already sold bitcoin to pay interest, leaving it heavily dependent on issuing shares at a premium and on a bitcoin rebound to keep accretion positive.
On the surface Strategy Inc is a provider of cloud-native enterprise business-intelligence (BI) and AI analytics software, charging enterprise customers subscription and license fees; but judged by its balance sheet and capital operations, it is in essence "a leveraged bitcoin fund wearing a software coat". The company raises fiat by issuing common stock at a premium and digital-credit instruments (such as preferred stock and convertible notes) in the capital markets, and converts almost all of the proceeds into bitcoin as a treasury reserve.
By segment, from Q2 2026 the company reports two segments: Software and Bitcoin.
On the books for the first half of 2026 (YTD6 2026), the software business contributed 100% of operating revenue ($246.67M) and 100% of the year-over-year increase ($21.12M). Its specific core contractual obligation shows up in remaining performance obligations (RPO, the value of contracts signed with customers but not yet recognized as revenue), most recently $546.9M, of which $320.1M is expected to be recognized within the next 12 months.
The Bitcoin segment produces no operating revenue under traditional accounting (0.0% of the total), but it holds a massive reserve of 846,000 bitcoin and booked $22.77B of unrealized losses in the first half, utterly dominating the balance sheet and the direction of net income. More importantly, the segment carries an extremely heavy segment-specific contractual obligation: the rigid interest cost of the digital-credit preferred stock. The STRC preferred, for instance, carries a fixed dividend rate of 11.25%–12%, and in Q2 2026 alone the company, squeezed for cash, was forced to sell 1,395 bitcoin to pay dividends.
By where each business sits in the value chain, the two show opposite characters.
-
The bitcoin business sits in layer three, proprietary assets and system wiring. By hoarding 846,000 bitcoin and issuing structured financial instruments linked to crypto assets (STRC, STRF and other preferreds with different yield and risk exposures), the company has built a unique financing conduit between traditional capital markets and crypto-native assets. Although the launch of spot ETFs stripped away part of its scarcity, its fee-free structure and built-in leverage still earn it a very high liquidity premium in the secondary market.
-
The software business has slid to layer four, workflow orchestration and execution. The Strategy One platform, though deeply embedded in some enterprise customers' data-analytics workflows, is essentially a "shallow interaction tool". Under relentless pressure from the big vendors' general-purpose analytics suites, its moat is eroding fast: product license revenue shrank 18.3% year over year, and the thin increment from the subscription transition is nowhere near enough to carry group-level capital expenditure.
